THE BULLDOG BEAUTY CONTEST will take place on Sun., Feb. 28, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Long Beach Marketplace (corner of PCH @ 2nd St.), around the grassy pond/center stage area. It's between Claim Jumper, CPK and Trader Joe's.

LAST YEAR'S VENUE (Marine Stadium) is under heavy construction and there is no parking available there, so we're doing the event at the Marketplace where there is tons of parking, lots of great restaurants, covered walkways for the 1-block parade of 300+ bulldogs, several large grassy areas for potty breaks, public restrooms, a large stage, and easier freeway access.

THE BULLDOG BEAUTY CONTEST will be the main event at this year's Haute Dog Pageants produced by beauty pageant and bulldog enthusiast Justin Rudd.  In addition to the Bulldog and French Bulldog contests, Rudd included pageants for Pugs and Senior Dogs (all breeds/mixes, ages 10+) this year for the first time.  Contestants ranging in age from four months to 17 years traveled to Long Beach, Calif., from as far as northern California, Las Vegas, and Arizona, to compete for the coveted 2009 titles.

The quadrapeds paraded down a grassy runway that included a 100-ft. red carpet runway, flanked by hundreds of gawkers and a panel of real-life beauty queen judges.  Judging was based on charm, first impression, face, figure and personality.

The Haute Dog Pageants are a fundraiser for Rudd's nonprofit 501c3 Community Action Team (C.A.T.) of which "Haute Dogs" and "Operation Santa Paws" are a part. Each dog in the contest donates a fee and several thousand dollars was raised from entry fees, front-row seating rentals along the runway and vendors space rentals.  

Leave plenty of time for parking - more than 1,000 spectators are expected again this year.

EACH YEAR IN FEB. in Long Beach, Calif., dogs and their lovers gather to celebrate faces that some say only a mother could love.  English bulldogs are the featured breed at this event that organizer Justin Rudd says is the largest gathering of bulldogs in the world.  In addition to the Bulldog Beauty Contest, other events in the day will feature French bulldogs, Pugs and senior dogs of all breeds/mixes.

Last year, more than 300 English bulldogs and 100 French bulldogs from at least four states and Canada left the crowd drooling for more.  Again this year, each quadruped will strut down a 100-ft. red carpet outdoor runway flanked by hundreds of seats, rentable for $5, for gawkers that will snake around the grassy park.  This is a competition where gender is no limitation and good looks are no advantage.

Costumes are optional, and not recommended.
Organizers realize that most dogs are so adorable that they shouldn't be covered up! We don't recommend outfits, since these dogs can overheat easily.

JUDGING
Real-life, reigning beauty queen judges will evaluate this fifth annual contest.  As with traditional beauty contests, the dogs in this pageant will be adjudicated on personality, charm, face, figure, and first impression.

THEY ARE COMING FROM AFAR!
Again this year, some dogs will travel a far distance to compete in Long Beach. So far, dogs are coming from as far as Glendale, Arizona (371 miles); Sandy Valley, Nevada (270 miles); and from Dublin, Calif. (375 miles) near San Francisco.

PRIZES AND CATEGORIES
In addition to a year of notoriety and fame and a bejeweled crown, the "most beautfiul" dogs in each of the four pageants (English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs and Senior Dogs) will also receive A PRIZE courtesy of Haute Dogs.

A top-10 will be announced in each of the breed categories and awards will be presented for the following: best smile; and best legs. Judges will evaluate every dog as they pass by on each of the categories above.

The event is produced by Justin Rudd/Haute Dogs and is co-sponsored by Gazette Newspapers and benefits Rudd's nonprofit 501c3 Community Action Team (CAT), which includes Haute Dogs and Operation Santa Paws, as well as beach cleanups, spelling bees, art contests, photography events and more.
